Never put these in a dumpster
- Paints, stains, and solvents (liquid hazardous waste).
- Motor oil, gasoline, and automotive fluids.
- Batteries — car and household.
- Tires (most landfills refuse them).
- Asbestos and asbestos-containing materials.
- Refrigerants — AC units and fridges must be drained and tagged.
- Medical waste and sharps.
- Propane tanks and pressurized cylinders.
Where to take prohibited items in Metro Detroit
- Household hazardous waste: Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties each run drop-off days for residents.
- Tires: most tire shops and some auto parts stores accept them for a small fee.
- Electronics and batteries: local e-waste recyclers and big-box take-back programs.
- Appliances with refrigerants: ask us — we can advise on certified draining partners.
